Luckily for Floridians, the hurricane season is here... NOT. Don't wait last minute to get your property ready. Here's a free preparation checklist you may use to help prepare your home for the upcoming storms ahead. If you don't feel comfortable doing those tasks yourself, please hire the right professional to help you.
Following these steps will help you get ready:
From the attic, inspect your roof for leaks after heavy rain.
Inspect your roof for damaged shingles or tiles. Hire a roofing contractor to repair loose and broken tiles.
Clean gutters and downspouts.
Install missing downspouts and downspout diverters.
Make sure all windows and doors caulk hasn't failed.
Inspect your front door weather stripping. Replace if damaged.
Inspect your garage door weather stripping. Replace if damaged.
If damaged, hire a garage door technician to repair or service your garage door.
Inspect trees for dead branches. Dead trees and branches should be removed by a professional company.
Cut tree branches that are within 6 feet of your property. Vegetation should not touch your house. It can damage your roof and your siding material during storm.
Make sure all opening protections, such as shutters, are easily accessible.
Test accordion shutters for proper operation.
Make sure all opening protection hardware is present.
Verify that your AC condenser unit (outside unit) is securely attached to it's concrete pad.
Verify that your exterior electrical panel dead front cover is present and water tight.
Put away any objects or outdoor furniture's that can potentially damage your house during high wind.
Lastly, be careful!!! Never attempt to fix problems yourself. Ask help from a professional.
